literary stoker-in-depth talks

Bram Stoker’s life and career was shaped by the strong women around him. Charlotte Stoker, his mother, raised him on folklore and stories of her own youth, while Speranza (Lady Jane Wilde, the mother of Oscar) was a key influence in expanding on his knowledge of Ireland’s folklore and mythology. There’s also Florence Balcombe, the woman he would marry and who Oscar Wilde had earlier pursued, amidst a host of other great characters.

Historian Donal Fallon of the Three Castles Burning podcast is joined by Marion McGarry, author of the acclaimed book Irish Customs and Rituals and an authority on Jane Wilde and Charlotte Stoker to discuss some of the women central to Stoker’s life and work. Live readings by actor Eva Jane Gaffney will bring their words to life. Tabharfaidh léamha beo leis an aisteoir Eva Jane Gaffney a gcuid focal beo.

This event takes place at the Graduate Memorial Building in Trinity College, home to the College Historical Society, of which Stoker was auditor. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to visit one of Dublin’s most storied venues.
