Join artist Paul McKinley and writer Sue Rainsford, an Irish fiction and arts writer, for an informal walk through of Péisteanna at Casino Marino on Monday 28 October at 3pm.
Sue was specially commissioned to write an essay about Péisteanna, which is rooted in the discovery of Gibbet Hill, a long long ghost story by Bram Stoker. This is a unique opportunity to hear them discuss Paul’s work in the Neoclassical jewel that is Casino Marino.
Sue Rainsford: A graduate of Trinity College and IADT, in January 2017 she completed her MFA in Writing & Literature at Bennington College, Vermont. She is a recipient of the VAI/DCC Art Writing Award, the Arts Council Literature Bursary Award and a MacDowell Fellowship (2019). She has been awarded residencies by such institutions as the Irish Museum of Modern Art and Maynooth University, and recent commissions include RTÉ Radio 1 and BBC Radio 4. Her début novel, Follow Me To Ground, was originally published by New Island Books in Ireland where it received the Kate O’Brien Award, was long-listed for the Desmond Elliott Prize and the Republic of Consciousness Award when it was published in the UK by Doubleday in 2019, and received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly when it was released in the US by Scribner in 2020. Most recently, her short story, “Shorn”, commissioned by RTÉ Radio 1 and read by Saoirse Ronan, was a finalist for the 2021 New York Radio Festival Awards, and she was appointed writer in residence at University College Dublin for 2022. Her second novel, Redder Days, was published by Doubleday in March 2021.
Paul McKinley: is an artist living and working in Dublin. Recent exhibitions include, ‘Sacred Trust, Donations and their legacy’, Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, 2024, ‘Pomegranate’, (solo) Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin, 2023, ‘Blume’, (solo) Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Dublin, 2021. ‘From the Mountain’, works from the Arts Council collection, Wexford Arts Centre, 2019 and ‘Many Worlds’, Centre Cultural Irlandais, Paris, 2017. Awarded the prestigious Nissan Art Project in 2007, McKinley has exhibited nationally and internationally and his work is included in the collections of Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, An Chomhairle Ealaíon/The Arts Council, Butler Gallery, Kilkenny, Trinity College Dublin, Office of Public Works and Allied Irish Bank and Kildare County Council.

The Casino of Marino is located in a secluded green park within the suburb of Marino. The road into the site is primarily for cars, and there is no pedestrian pathway. The road is lined with a soft curb and is then surrounded by maintained lawns. The entrance to the Casino of Marino is located within a quiet residential area with paved pathways.

Entry
There are approximately 10 steps with no railing leading up to the entrance of the Casino of Marino. There is no flat entry point. The doors are heavy set, but members of staff will be tending to them during the event.
Space
The Casino of Marino is a protected 18th Century building, so very little of this space can be modernised. The Casino of Marino has three levels, all accessed by staircases. Some of these staircases are narrow and winding. There is a steep drop at the top of the steps of the monument. There is no wheelchair access into the venue itself.

Basement: kitchen, skullery, pantry, ale cellar, Butler’s room
First floor: waiting room, State Room, pink room, servant’s room
